Shoot Black Powder on Long Rifle Range Only
2021 is shaping up to be a bad fire season and some have expressed concerns about allowing shooting activities. The Salmon Arm Fish and Game Club (SAFGC) continues to monitor the fire risk by working with the local Fire Department.
I want to reaffirm that the SAFGC will comply with any orders from Salmon Arm’s Fire Chief and the BC Ministry of Forestry. Director Neil Wuolle is in communication with the Salmon Arm Fire Risk Assessment Officer, who advises our club about the fire risk and hazard. To-date there has been no order to close down our shooting range such as we experienced in 2017.
Neil Wuolle met with the S.A. Fire Dept. Fire Prevention Officer July 28, 2021 to tour out shooting facility. Based on that assessment, we will continue to operate most of the range facilities. The Duck Tower and the Black Powder Trail are CLOSED – NO SHOOTING of any kind at the tower or trail for the duration of the high fire danger period. Anyone shooting BLACK POWDER (muzzleloaders and BP cartridge breechloaders), we ask you please do so ONLY on the LONG RIFLE RANGE.
As MEMBERS we all must BE VIGILANT. We ask that users of the TRAP Range be especially watchful when using that range. At any sign of fire anywhere, even if you put it out, please call 911 Fire Department so they can wet down the area and assess.
All emergency services have access to the shooting range with key Fobs and key codes. The club installed cell boosters in the clubhouse, handgun range and long rifle range this summer so we can call 911 services from the shooting range.
Fire extinguishers at SAFGC were re-charged and certified in July 2021. These extinguishers are located at each shooting range; please familiarize yourself with their location. During our club’s modernization in 2018-2019, Policy 6.0: Wildfire Hazard Range Management and Policy 7.0: Fire Smart Management were created and adopted. Please review the policies on our website at safgc.ca/about/policies.
Considering the high risk of forest fire, we ask that members be careful and follow all safety rules. Club safety signage indicates no exploding targets such as tannerite, no tracer bullets and no armour piercing bullets. Use approved targets and position them so the bullet strikes the backstop, not the ground or side berms. Never shoot at stones or targets on the ground; all targets must be 18 inches up off the ground.
Smokers, please do not smoke while out on the shooting range and checking your targets. Galvanized buckets filled with sand are provided on each shooting range for you to extinguish your cigarettes. The archery range has no place to extinguish cigarettes; we ask that you do not smoke on this range.
Thank you for your cooperation.
