The recent announcement of the Liberal Government amendments to Bill C-21 is increasingly concerning to licensed firearms owners, Certified Ranges and Clubs across Canada, as well as a myriad of other citizens of our country, and beyond. These amendments would add over 1400 firearms, and likely many more to the pre-existing ban list that was originally drafted for increasing regulations on handguns.
Unfortunately, as we witnessed with the Order in Council in May of 2020 and the original Bill C-21, these increased and unneeded gun control measures continue to not address the root cause of the crimes committed. These measures affect licensed owners who are background checked and are vetted by the RCMP before even being licensed, and who have obtained their property legally. These prohibitions do not address the border security issues where illegal firearms originate where over 85% are smuggled into Canada from the USA. This statistic comes directly from police statements.
Again, it is not law-abiding citizens doing these crimes.
It has been recognized by multiple police agencies and Statistics Canada where data shows that licensed firearms owners with legally obtained property are not the ones committing firearms related crime.
We as Canadians are extremely disappointed and shocked how the Liberal Government has decided to not only continue ignoring the facts and statistics but have circumvented democratic process in bringing these amendments in the House of Commons.
The G4 amendment is a broad and sweeping ban on semi-automatic rifles and shotguns, as well as multiple lever action and bolt action rifles – all of which are hunting rifles used by hunters, farmers, and First Nations people to provide for their families.
The Liberal Government has made it very clear to Canadians that they are not interested in statistics, facts, debate or legal and lawful democratic process when bringing in these proposed laws, Bills and amendments into the House of Commons.
On behalf of the Salmon Arm Fish & Game Club, we wish to make our stance clear that we do not support Bill C-21 or the G4 amendments. We hope people will also acknowledge the grave impact this will have on our community, should this Bill and amendments pass.
